Green Hydrogen Project Tracking — Sinopec Signs 4.5 GW Saudi Electrolysis Hydrogen Production Project

  • Aug 27, 2025, at 1:45 pm

Recently, Sinopec signed a front-end engineering design (Feed + convertible EPC) contract with Saudi International Power and Water Company (ACWA Power) for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Project in Saudi Arabia

. According to the contract, Guangzhou Engineering Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sinopec Engineering Group (SEG), will form a consortium with a Spanish company to provide preliminary engineering services for the project. Once completed, it will become the world's largest green hydrogen/green ammonia production complex, effectively promoting the large-scale development and application of green hydrogen/green ammonia technology and contributing to the global energy transition

. The project is located in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, and will use wind and solar power generation to produce green ammonia. It includes 4.5 GW of water electrolysis hydrogen production facilities, approximately 8,000 mt/day of ammonia synthesis facilities, a seawater desalination plant, dedicated wharfs, and other utility and auxiliary production facilities. It is expected to commence commercial operation in 2030, producing 400,000 mt of green hydrogen and 2.8 million mt of green ammonia annually.

A relevant official from Sinopec Engineering Group stated that the successful signing of the Feed + convertible EPC contract for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Project is another achievement of Sinopec's deep commitment to high-quality co-construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative. It also marks an important milestone for the company in deeply participating in and promoting the global energy transition. The Engineering Group will continue to leverage its experience, technology, and management advantages in the green energy sector, contributing Chinese strength to the global development of green energy.

Led by Sinopec, a central state-owned enterprise green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation innovation consortium was established. High standards were set for the construction of the Kuche Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project in Xinjiang, actively building a hydrogen energy equipment manufacturing base. Eleven hydrogen supply centers for fuel cells and 144 hydrogen refueling stations have been built, establishing seven "hydrogen corridors" along the New Western Land-Sea Corridor, Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Tianjin, Chengdu-Chongqing, Shanghai-Jiaxing-Ningbo, Jinan-Qingdao, and Wuhan-Yichang expressways, basically covering the "3+2" fuel cell demonstration city clusters, making it the company with the most operational hydrogen refueling stations globally.

Meanwhile, the company has actively leveraged its industrial capital advantages, investing in 13 companies across various segments of the hydrogen industry chain, including hydrogen production technology, hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen energy equipment manufacturing, proton exchange membranes, and hydrogen refueling station construction.
