Recently, PowerChina participated in the design of the Shanghai Electric Taonan Wind Power Coupled with Biomass Green Methanol Integrated Demonstration Project, which has been successfully put into operation.
Located in the Green Energy and Chemical Industry Park in western Jilin (Taonan), this project is the country's first large-scale wind and solar power hydrogen production coupled with biomass green methanol production project. It is also an important part of the strategic layout of "Hydrogen-Powered Jilin" and "Jilin Hydrogen to Shanghai," playing a demonstrative and leading role in the development of the national new energy industry. Based on abundant wind and biomass energy, the project creates an "industry chain" of "green new energy + green chemicals," providing a new technological route and business model for large-scale green electricity consumption.
Relying on the abundant wind and solar power and biomass resources in western Jilin, the project integrates core equipment independently developed and produced by equipment enterprises. By collecting biomass straw, conducting pre-treatment, and adopting technologies such as pure oxygen pressurized biomass gasification, wind power hydrogen production, and CO₂-rich synthesis gas methanol synthesis, it converts agricultural and forestry waste and wind power into high-value-added green methanol on-site, achieving efficient utilization of biomass and wind energy and generating considerable economic benefits.
The product will be sold as marine fuel in the international market. It is expected that after the project is fully operational, the annual production of green methanol will reach 250,000 mt, with an initial annual production of 50,000 mt. Due to the adoption of zero fossil energy participation technology throughout the process, the carbon emissions over the entire life cycle are reduced by nearly 70% compared to traditional coal-to-methanol production, with the first phase of the project reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 65,000 mt. This project will accelerate the construction of an entire industry chain platform covering "green electricity - green hydrogen - green methanol - green applications," promoting the large-scale application of green fuels in shipping, aviation, and other fields, and contributing a systematic Chinese solution to global industrial decarbonization.
