Researchers from Tianjin University have recently made a significant breakthrough in battery technology, successfully developing a lithium metal pouch battery with an energy density exceeding 600Wh/kg, and a battery pack energy density of 480Wh/kg.
According to Xinhua News Agency, this innovation has increased the energy density and driving range by 2 to 3 times compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. The report notes that this breakthrough comes at a time when there is a surge in demand for high-capacity, long-range batteries in fields such as EVs, consumer electronics, robotics, and the low-altitude economy. While energy density is crucial, its improvement has always faced technical challenges.
Although lithium metal batteries have greater potential than standard lithium-ion batteries, their development has long been constrained by electrolyte design. The research team from Tianjin University overcame this challenge by introducing a new "delocalized electrolyte" to optimize the solvation structure, thereby enhancing both the performance and cycle life of the battery.
This project not only developed high-capacity batteries and battery packs but also significantly improved safety and cycle stability. A pilot production line has now been completed and put into operation, with the related technology already applied to three domestic micro drones.
