In May, South African mining production increased by 0.2% YoY, with iron ore being the largest contributor to the positive growth.

According to MiningWeekly, the latest statistics from Statistics South Africa (SSA) show that in May, the country's mining production increased by 0.2% YoY, with iron ore being the largest positive contributor, while manganese ore and coal were the biggest drags.

Iron ore production increased by 12.5% YoY, while manganese ore production decreased by 13% and coal production decreased by 4.6% YoY.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 3.7% MoM, compared to being basically flat in April and increasing by 3.9% MoM in March.

From March to May, seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2.6% MoM. The largest contributor was iron ore, while coal was the biggest drag.

Meanwhile, SSA found that in May, South Africa's mineral product sales increased by 18.8% YoY at current prices.

The largest contributor was gold (with a 338.7% increase, contributing 25.5 percentage points), while platinum group metals were the biggest drag (with a 15.6% decrease, dragging down by 4.1 percentage points).

At current prices, seasonally adjusted mineral product sales increased by 6.3% MoM in May. The increase was 7.6% MoM in April and 2.9% MoM in March.

At current prices, seasonally adjusted mineral product sales increased by 4.1% MoM from March to May.
