The consumer battery cell industry chain mainly consists of three segments: upstream raw material supply, midstream battery manufacturing, and downstream application product manufacturing. The upstream segment primarily includes the supply of battery cell raw materials such as cathode materials, anode materials, electrolytes, and separators. The midstream segment is mainly responsible for manufacturing consumer batteries using complex production processes. The downstream segment primarily integrates various consumer battery cells into end-use products.
The consumer battery cell industry chain is mainly divided into three segments: upstream, midstream, and downstream. Each segment is interconnected, playing its role to collectively complete the entire consumer battery cell industry chain.
- Upstream
The main raw materials for consumer battery cells include cathode materials, anode materials, electrolytes, and separators. Cathode materials mainly consist of LCO, LMO, LFP, and ternary cathode materials. Anode materials primarily include graphite-based materials and silicon-based materials. Electrolytes are typically composed of lithium chemicals and organic solvents. Separators are mainly made from PP and PE materials, which, through different production processes, serve to isolate the cathode and anode to prevent short circuits while allowing lithium ions to pass through.
- Midstream
The midstream segment is primarily responsible for battery manufacturing. The production process of consumer battery cells is complex, involving more than ten steps, including mixing, coating, punching/slitting, stacking/winding, welding, electrolyte injection, pre-formation, forming, and sealing/testing. Consumer battery cells mainly include LCO cells, LMO cells, LFP cells, and ternary lithium cells. Among these, LMO cells, LFP cells, and ternary lithium cells are also referred to as small power battery cells. Major global producers in the consumer battery cell market include ATL (Amperex Technology Limited), CosMX Battery, BYD, and Sunwoda. In 2024, demand for consumer lithium batteries is expected to recover, driven by new-type consumer electronics such as drones, with China's demand for consumer lithium batteries up 14% YoY.
- Downstream
Consumer battery cells are widely used in smartphones, laptops, tablets, smart wearables, power tools, and electric two-wheelers. Therefore, downstream companies are mostly terminal device manufacturers in sectors such as digital products, power tools, and two-wheelers. Major producers include digital electronics companies such as Apple, Huawei, Samsung, vivo, and Oppo. In addition to these common consumer electronics brands, emerging smart hardware fields (e.g., drones, smart wearables, and smart home devices) also have high demand for consumer battery cells. As the smartphone and laptop markets mature, the rise of emerging markets has driven growth in demand for wearables, portable medical devices, humanoid robots, and other applications. Although end-use demand for consumer products has shown signs of recovery, the demand share for LCO and LMO has further declined. Globally, these are expected to grow steadily at compound annual growth rates of 8% and 9%, respectively, in the long term.
