Bolivia opened its first industrial-scale lithium plant on December 15, with President Luis Arce attending the opening ceremony. The plant, located on the Uyuni salt flat, is expected to produce 15,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate per year although it’s unclear if that will be battery grade material.
The state-owned company YLB and the Russian Uranium One Group signed an agreement to build a direct extraction plant in Potosi for $450 million, while Chinese investors led by CATL plan to spend $1.4 billion on other projects.
This significant step symbolizes Bolivia’s commitment to tapping into its vast lithium deposits to boost its economy and catch up with its neighbors such as Argentina and Chile.
