According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Tracker of Worldwide PC Devices, global tablet shipments declined by 19.1% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2023, totaling 30.7 million units.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Tracker of Worldwide PC Devices, global tablet shipments declined by 19.1% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2023, totaling 30.7 million units.

Tablet shipments fell 3.3% YoY in the previous quarter.

All of the leading tablet vendors experienced declines in the first quarter of 2023, partly due to consumer frenzy over electronics as work from home and online education wind down as the COVID-19 lockdown ends. Another reason is the growing inflation and economic slowdown worldwide, weakening consumer demand for shopping.

And suppliers are focusing on clearing as much inventory as possible ahead of new model launches, leading to lower shipments in the first half of 2023.

Apple and Samsung still dominated, and the two together accounted for 58% of the tablet market. Huawei came in third, with Lenovo and Amazon fourth and fifth, respectively.

Amazon’s tablet shipments fell 62% year-on-year, the company’s worst performance since the pandemic began.

Still, experts remain hopeful about the future of the tablet market, arguing that signs of global economic recovery, such as easing inflation, could improve shipments in the second half of 2023.

Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers, is optimistic. He noted that despite the drop in tablet shipments, there is hope as more vendors are showing interest in the segment.

A few days ago, it was reported that Google is about to launch the Pixel tablet computer at the I/O developer conference, which shows that there is still potential demand in the market.

The re-entry of Google will enhance the Android tablet experience, while also making the tablet a key part of the smart home.

Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst at IDC Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers, wrote in the report that lockdowns during the pandemic have actually had a favorable impact on tablet adoption, and some vendors have taken advantage of the opportunity to develop tablets for use in various scenarios. In particular, large-screen tablets suitable for work and study saw a significant increase in market share compared to before the pandemic.
