[SMM survey] Hydrogen Energy Weekly Electrolyzer Industry Review (20240105-0109)

Capacity side, the domestic alkaline electrolyzer market is maintained at 43.77 GW, and the PEM electrolyzer market is maintained at 2.7 GW, with no new capacity added yet.

LONGi Hydrogen Energy completed the shipment of its first 5 MW alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production system targeting the European market.

Tianji Hydrogen Energy Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. successfully delivered its first anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis hydrogen production product.

Electrolyzer Project Updates:

Lvliang Park Construction and Development Co., Ltd.:Lvliang Economic and Technological Development Zone New-Type Materials Industrial Park Green Electricity Hydrogen Production Construction Project preliminary design tender. The project mainly involves constructing a production workshop of 3,072 m², supporting facilities including a hazardous waste temporary storage room, spare parts warehouse, ESS area, substation, central control room, laboratory building, air compression and nitrogen generation station, and refrigeration station, purchasing 5 sets of 1,000 Nm³/h ALK electrolyzers and 5 sets of 400 Nm³/h AEM electrolyzers. Upon full completion, the project is expected to achieve an annual hydrogen production of 3,400 mt.

Sinopec Materials & Equipment Department (International Business) Company: Announced the bid evaluation results for the water electrolyzers (alkaline electrolyzer water hydrogen production, capacity 1,000-1,500 Nm³/h) for the Zhongtian Hechuang Ordos Coal Chemical Project. Specific quoted prices were as follows: Hydrogen Qiji quoted 2.698 million yuan/set, Huadian Engineering quoted 2.76 million yuan/set, and LONGi Hydrogen Energy quoted 2.8532 million yuan/set. Reportedly, the project plans to procure 48 sets of electrolyzers with a capacity of 1,000 Nm³/h, 4 sets with a capacity of 2,000 Nm³/h, and 6 spherical tanks with a capacity of 1,875 m³/h, accompanied by an electrical energy storage system (3 MW/6 MWh). The hydrogen produced will be used for the Zhongtian Hechuang coal chemical project.

Inner Mongolia Yide Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd.:Baotou Guyang County annual 350,000 mt green methanol production project was filed. Construction location: Guyang County, Baotou City. Planned construction period: from March 2026 to March 2028. It is understood that the project's main construction content involves using new energy wind power in Guyang County for water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, coupled with biomass gasification-derived green carbon syngas for synthesis, to produce 350,000 mt of green methanol annually.

China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute:Officially signed the Tibet Lhasa Clean and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Comprehensive Development Project, involving feasibility study for annual production of 100,000 mt of green aviation fuel and survey & design for the demonstration project. This project will integrate green electricity, hydrogen energy, and CCUS technologies. Reportedly, the project investor is Tibet Kunlun Guangyu Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd., with the ultimate controlling shareholder being China National Petroleum Corporation.

Sinopec Star (Inner Mongolia) West Hydrogen East Transmission New Energy Co., Ltd.:Ulanqab 100,000 mt/year wind and solar power hydrogen integrated project (hydrogen production plant part) completed filing on December 29. The construction site is located in Shangdu County, Ulanqab City. Total investment and self-owned funds for the project are both 5.94 billion yuan, with a planned construction period from Jun 2024 to Jun 2026. It is reported that the project will mainly involve the construction of 25 new hydrogen production plants, each equipped with 8 electrolyzer units, totaling 200 sets of 1000 Nm³/h alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production units. Additionally, a 6000 cubic meter low-pressure buffer tank and approximately 47.6 km of reclaimed water transmission pipelines will be built.

Yihydro (Jiangsu) New Energy Co., Ltd.:The AEM Green Hydrogen Equipment Intelligent Manufacturing Base project in Gehu, Yixing, Jiangsu Province, has been filed. The total investment for this project is 120 million yuan.

Tongyu Xiangtong New Energy Co., Ltd.:New progress has been made in the Jilin Energy Tongyu Green Hydrogen-Based Energy Integration Project by China Nuclear Power Integration: its wind power component has been approved. Previously, the chemical component of the project had been filed. The overall project plans to build an annual production of 1.8 million mt of green methanol, utilizing advanced water electrolysis hydrogen production technology, combined with carbon dioxide to synthesize green methanol. Main equipment includes electrolyzers, power supply systems, control systems, etc.

Tongliao Fengyuan Bioenergy Co., Ltd.:A project for the annual production of 100,000 mt of green ammonia has been filed. The construction site is located in Kailu County, Tongliao City, with a total investment of 1 billion yuan, including 300 million yuan in self-owned funds and 700 million yuan in bank loans. The planned construction period is from May 2026 to April 2028. The scale and content of the construction involve using wind and solar power and other green electricity for water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, which then reacts with nitrogen obtained from air separation to produce green ammonia. The project will include the construction of a water electrolysis hydrogen production workshop, an air separation nitrogen production workshop, a hydrogen and nitrogen compression workshop, an ammonia synthesis workshop, ammonia storage, and other facilities. Upon completion, the project will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 mt of green ammonia.

Huadian (Wenchang) New Energy Co., Ltd.:The environmental impact report for the Huadian Wenchang Green Electricity Green Hydrogen Application Demonstration Project has been approved by the Department of Ecology and Environment of Hainan Province. The project construction site is in Changyang Village, Changsa Town, Wenchang City, Hainan Province. The total investment is 18.1 million yuan. Construction content includes a hydrogen production workshop (equipped with one set of 200 Nm³/h water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment), a pure water preparation workshop, production auxiliary buildings, hydrogen storage facilities, etc.

Lanzhou New District Nengke Ecological Development Co., Ltd.:Tender information has been released for the EPC general contract of the 100,000 mt/year biomass green methanol project (Phase I). The total investment for this project reaches 1,427,398,700 yuan. The main construction content involves a 100,000 mt/year biomass gasification coupled green hydrogen production for green methanol project. Key production installations include biomass gasification to syngas units, shift and purification, compression, methanol synthesis, methanol distillation, water electrolysis hydrogen production, and other processes. Additionally, 200 MW of PV power generation facilities will be built (note that PV power generation and transmission lines are not included in this tender scope). The project timeline requires completion from March 2026 to September 2027, with a total duration not exceeding 18 months, including construction during winter and rainy seasons.

Policy Review

1. The National Energy Administration issued the "Guidelines for Assessing the Power System Carrying Capacity of Distributed Power Supply Connections." The document states that among important product standards, the hydrogen energy sector involves clean low-carbon hydrogen, green synthetic ammonia, and green methanol. The concentrated release of these three standards precisely addresses the gaps in the green evaluation system for hydrogen energy and related industries, providing a unified technical benchmark for hydrogen from production to downstream integrated applications. This marks a significant milestone in promoting the standardization and low-carbon development of the hydrogen energy industry.

2. The hydrogen initiative AquaVentus calls for clear legislative measures to achieve cost-efficient and system-friendly development of offshore wind power. Its core stance is to legally establish hybrid connection solutions in a timely manner, allowing offshore wind farms to connect via both power cables and hydrogen pipelines.

3. The General Office of the Shanxi Provincial People's Government released the "2026 List of Provincial Key Engineering Projects." Among the 629 provincial key projects across the province, 8 hydrogen-related projects are explicitly included. In the field of hydrogen production, these include Jinxin New Energy's annual 200 million cubic meters hydrogen energy and supporting coking project, Lingshi Tianxing's coke oven gas-to-hydrogen and hydrogen refueling integrated station project, and Jiexiu Ruixin's 60,000 Nm³/h coke oven gas carbon emission reduction to LNG coupled with hydrogen production (liquid ammonia adjustment) project. In core equipment manufacturing, Wenjing Energy's annual production of 5,000 sets of hydrogen fuel cell engines project. In industrial integration and cross-sector applications, Jingang Group's hydrogen metallurgy and silicon steel new materials project, and the Changzhi 5 million mt steel-coking-hydrogen integrated demonstration base project (preliminary stage); Lingshi's annual 150,000 mt sustainable aviation fuel SAF project, and the Shanxi unmanned aircraft (hydrogen energy) and aircraft intelligent manufacturing base project.

4. The European Commission approved a €4 billion electrolyzer special fund, providing a 30% equipment cost subsidy for projects with capacity ≥500 MW/year, and setting a 2030 green hydrogen project electrolyzer efficiency target of ≥60% (LHV benchmark).

Jidian Shares:Formally signed a "Green Fuel Procurement Memorandum of Understanding" with representatives of South Korean clean energy enterprises during the China-South Korea Business Cooperation Agreement signing ceremony held during a high-level South Korean visit to China.

Jindi Shares:Announced its intention to acquire a 3.3644% equity stake in Baoshilai New Materials held by Sany Hydrogen Energy for 21.6044 million yuan, and signed a "Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement" with Baoshilai New Materials Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. in the field of hydrogen energy. Subsequently, the two parties will prioritize packaging and promoting to the market the precision structural components, such as pole plates and end plates from Jindi Co., Ltd., along with core components like electrodes and nickel meshes from Baoshilai, in end-use products such as hydrogen electrolyzers.

China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd.: The Wind and Solar Power-to-Hydrogen Integrated Project in Aohan Banner and Yuanbaoshan District, invested and constructed by China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd., successfully obtained the CertifHy EU RFNBO pre-certification certificate issued by Bureau Veritas.

1. Research achievement by Liao Qiang's team from Chongqing University—an innovative design of the anode transport layer in PEM electrolyzers addresses the issue of bubble blockage under high current density.

The newly developed non-precious metal electrodes by Ansizhuo New Energy exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, achieving a hydrogen evolution overpotential of 180 mV and an oxygen evolution overpotential of 245 mV at 100 mA·cm−2, while maintaining an energy conversion efficiency of over 70% and a hydrogen purity of 99.9%.

2. The research team led by researcher Shi Le from the College of Environmental and Resource Sciences at Zhejiang University, in collaboration with Professor Weng Xiaole's research team, and Bruce E. Logan from Pennsylvania State University in the US, In collaboration with Professor Logan's research group, a breakthrough has been achieved in the field of distributed hydrogen production via electrolysis using non-traditional water sources. The main content involves the direct production of green hydrogen from non-traditional water sources through water vapor electrolysis.
