[SMM Analysis] New breakthrough in lithium battery technology: Can a single injection extend battery life?

  • May 30, 2025, at 10:21 pm
On February 13, Fudan University announced that the team led by Huisheng Peng/Yue Gao from the Department of Macromolecular Science had made a significant breakthrough in the field of lithium batteries. The research team overturned traditional design concepts and innovatively combined artificial intelligence (AI) with organic electrochemistry to successfully design a lithium carrier molecule. After injecting this molecule into the battery, it can precisely replenish the lithium ions lost during the battery's cycling process, thereby achieving non-destructive restoration of battery capacity. This technology provides crucial support for the transformation of the battery industry.

On February 13, Fudan University announced that the team led by Peng Huisheng/Gao Yue from the Department of Macromolecular Science had achieved a major breakthrough in the field of lithium batteries.

According to the research report, after applying this technology, the battery's health status remains close to its factory level even after tens of thousands of charge-discharge cycles. The cycle life has been significantly increased from the current 500-2,000 cycles to 12,000-60,000 cycles. This is the first time internationally that such a significant improvement in battery lifespan has been achieved.

In the early morning of February 13, Beijing time, the relevant breakthrough research results were officially published in the top academic journal Nature under the title "External Li supply reshapes Li-deficiency and lifetime limit of batteries."

SMM believes that if the battery non-destructive restoration technology developed by Fudan University can be transformed from laboratory research to large-scale production, it is expected to bring multi-dimensional improvements to the waste battery recycling industry: In the short term, this technology can simultaneously reduce exhaust gas treatment volume and carbon emission costs by extending the battery's retirement period. In the long term, its low-carbon characteristics will not only help enterprises meet international carbon footprint certification requirements but also significantly enhance their ability to comply with overseas environmental protection regulations such as the EU's New Battery Act. This will provide crucial technical support for the implementation of the globalization strategies of Chinese recycling enterprises, particularly in forming differentiated competitiveness in compliance areas such as the Battery Passport traceability system.
