Job Responsibilities
- Build & Leverage Industry Networks — Develop and maintain a proprietary network of senior contacts across Australian lithium, iron ore, aluminium, and coal value chains to source market-moving intelligence.
- Conduct Daily Market Research — Engage regularly with industry participants via calls, online meetings, and interviews to capture first-hand intelligence on production, shipments, pricing sentiment, and operational changes — supplemented by periodic site visits to key mining regions.
- Deliver Price Assessments — Produce daily/weekly price benchmarks for Australian mineral and metal products in compliance with IOSCO principles, and defend pricing rationale to market participants.
- Perform Deep-Dive Analysis — Build mine-level cost curves; develop supply-demand scenario models (short, medium, and long-term); analyze policy, regulatory, and technology disruption impacts on Australian commodity markets.
- Publish High-Impact Research — Author market outlooks, thematic reports, and strategic commentaries with sufficient analytical rigor to be cited by industry media and financial institutions.
- Drive Thought Leadership — Represent SMM at industry conferences and client briefings, establishing our voice in the Australian and global metals community.
- Collaborate Globally — Partner with SMM research teams in Shanghai, London, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta on cross-regional projects and methodology alignment.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or above in Economics, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mining Engineering, Financial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of solid analytical, reporting, or pricing experience in global commodity markets, the metals/mining industry, or top-tier industrial consulting firms. Depth in one or more of lithium, iron ore, aluminium, or coal is highly valued.
- Native or near-native fluency in English, enabling high-stakes commercial negotiations and senior-level interviews.
- Possess an established, high-value personal network of senior contacts and key decision-makers within the Australian metals, mining, or broader commodity supply chain.
- Deep knowledge of international pricing principles (e.g., IOSCO regulations), with a proven track record of applying editorial judgement and defending pricing methodologies during high-pressure or anomalous market sessions.
- Advanced competencies in mathematical modeling, supply-demand forecasting, and econometric analysis, with experience guiding the deployment of AI-driven analytical models.
- Excellent public speaking and thought leadership capabilities, with documented experience chairing industry panels, delivering keynotes, or presenting at international conferences.
- Based in Perth or Sydney with valid Australian work rights. Remote work arrangement.
