Accurec, a German enterprise specializing in battery raw material recycling for 30 years, officially put into operation Europe’s one-of-a-kind lithium recovery facility on December 1, 2025. Located in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, the facility adopts the independently developed CLIMA thermochemical process. It can extract lithium with a purity rate of over 99% from all types of lithium batteries, featuring low energy consumption and contributing to enhanced independent supply capacity of critical raw materials in Europe. This technological breakthrough addresses the current situation where demand for lithium batteries is surging and core technologies as well as raw materials are heavily reliant on Asia. Its process eliminates the need to copy the Asian model, and is better suited to Europe’s cost structure. Part of the facility’s technology has been jointly developed with Evonik. By leveraging electrochemical separation technology with highly selective ceramic membranes, it further improves lithium recovery rates and facilitates the closed-loop lithium cycle of lithium batteries. As a pioneering enterprise that independently undertakes the full-process R&D, manufacturing and operation of recycling facilities, Accurec plans to expand its production capacity and double its lithium output after obtaining all necessary approvals in the future.
