[SMM Steel] India’s push toward green steel faces significant practical challenges despite strong policy ambitions. Scrap-based production via EAF/IF is seen as the most viable near-term pathway, but logistics disruptions, high freight costs, and reduced scrap exports from Europe are tightening supply conditions. Moreover, scrap alone cannot meet the requirements for high-grade flat steel production, limiting its role in full decarbonisation. While hydrogen-based DRI offers long-term potential, adoption remains limited. As a result, most new capacity still relies on coal-based production, indicating that India’s green steel transition will likely remain gradual, dependent on improvements in scrap supply chains and clean energy availability.

Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced a new clean energy auction under Resolution 40208 to secure 15-year supply contracts starting in 2030. The scheme supports solar, wind, battery storage, and hybrid projects through four distinct product categories, including peak-hour supply to incentivize energy storage. By mitigating price volatility and addressing climate-related risks like 'El Niño', the initiative aims to strengthen the national power system and accelerate the integration of renewable energy. The auction process is scheduled for completion by July 31, 2026.

【SMM Copper News Flash】On April 28, the Zhejiang UHV AC ring network project, with a total investment of 29.3 billion yuan, officially commenced construction. The project will build three new UHV substations in Jiaxing, Ningshao, and Wenzhou, expand the Liandu substation, and add 508 kilometers of double-circuit lines, upgrading Zhejiang's power grid from a "T"-shaped configuration to a complete ring network, enabling the absorption of over 57 billion kWh of clean energy annually. The project will adopt core equipment such as 1000 kV high-impedance transformers and low-noise reactors.

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has released a draft rule to modernize distribution network planning. The proposal replaces existing annual reports with five-year 'distribution network plans' covering a 20-year horizon, aimed at improving data accessibility for distributed energy resources like rooftop solar, batteries, and EVs. The reform seeks to lower curtailment by enabling targeted network upgrades. Data from the Clean Energy Council confirms Australia's rooftop solar capacity reached 28.3 GW by the end of 2025, with 4.3 million installations contributing 14.2% of total electricity generation in the second half of 2025. Stakeholder submissions for the proposal are due by June 4.
