Johnson Matthey, in North America (e.g., refineries in Michigan and New Jersey), increased the yield and throughput of high-purity platinum and palladium (purity of 99.99%+) by optimizing solvent extraction and electrolysis purification processes and upgrading automation, in order to address the tight supply of raw materials from South Africa and Russia. BASF, in North America (e.g., sites in Michigan and Ohio), focused on improving the efficiency of secondary refining of platinum and palladium as well as catalyst regeneration, while expanding capacity for high-purity platinum and palladium salts and sponge, in order to offset the impact of restricted imports of Russian platinum group metals (PGMs) and production cuts at South African mines.

Dec 15, 2023 18:01With the rapid development of the NEV industry, the number of power lithium-ion batteries has been growing exponentially. Currently, the recycling of cathode materials for lithium batteries has been largely commercialized, but the recycling of retired anode graphite is still in its infancy. According to industry forecasts, the total amount of scrap graphite anodes to be recycled in 2025 will exceed 150,000 mt, with an annual compound growth rate of around 40%. The market potential and demand for both virgin and scrap graphite anode materials are enormous. However, the supply of non-renewable graphite resources is limited, and the environmental pressure from discarded graphite is significant. High-quality, low-cost repair and recycling of scrap graphite with high impurity content and severely damaged crystal structures remain industry challenges. Currently, the industry still lacks large-scale, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly solutions. What are the main challenges faced by current scrap lithium battery anode recycling technologies? In which fields do recycled anode materials have potential application value? What are the possible future directions and trends in scrap lithium battery anode recycling technology?
