Jun 12, 2026 13:42German aluminum producer Trimet has announced a series of investments to expand its recycling operations across Germany. The company has increased capacity at its Gelsenkirchen recycling plant through the installation of new melting units, adding up to 80,000 tones of annual recycled aluminum output. From August 2026, the site will begin using hydrogen-rich process gas to reduce CO₂ emissions. Trimet is also building a new recycling facility in Hamm, scheduled to start operations by the end of 2026, focusing on aluminum scrap sorting, processing and logistics using laser-based analysis technology. In addition, storage upgrades at its Essen site will add around 16,000 tones of capacity. The company is also expanding its portfolio of high-recycled-content aluminum alloys for automotive and industrial applications.
Jun 10, 2026 17:46Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has established a closed-loop aluminum recycling system at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, creating what it describes as a European-first process for recovering aluminum from end-of-life vehicles and reusing it in new hybrid vehicle production. Recycled aluminum from discarded alloy wheels is sent to Toyota’s Deeside engine plant in Wales, where it is processed into hybrid powertrain components before returning to Burnaston for installation in new Corolla vehicles. Toyota produced its first vehicle containing recycled aluminum from this system on March 19, 2026. The Burnaston facility serves as a pilot site, with a second Circular Factory planned for Wałbrzych, Poland, later this year.
Jun 9, 2026 14:28Trimet is expanding its recycling network in Germany to strengthen raw material security and support low-carbon aluminum production. The company has increased capacity at its Gelsenkirchen recycling facility, where new melting units will add up to 80,000 tones of annual recycled aluminum capacity. Starting in August 2026, the site will also use hydrogen-rich process gas to reduce CO₂ emissions. A new recycling facility in Hamm is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2026, featuring laser-based scrap sorting technology for precise alloy separation. Trimet has also expanded storage capacity at its Essen site, adding around 16,000 tones of handling capacity. The company continues to develop high-recycled-content aluminum alloys for automotive and structural applications.
Jun 9, 2026 10:08[SMM Aluminum Express News] Alupro has launched a new manifesto calling for policy reforms to accelerate a circular aluminum packaging economy in the UK. The industry group is advocating for stronger recycling infrastructure, can-to-can closed-loop recycling, greater use of recycled aluminum in packaging, and targeted support to improve competitiveness and decarbonization across the aluminum value chain. Alupro said the initiative aims to improve recycled material availability for new aluminum packaging production while supporting long-term growth in the UK’s packaging and recycling sectors.
Jun 1, 2026 14:52Aluminum Deutschland said Germany’s aluminum industry remained under pressure in Q1 2026, with recycled aluminum production falling 3% YoY to 684,564 tones and semi-finished aluminum output declining 1% YoY to 568,688 tones. Remelter production dropped 4%, while extruded products fell 4% amid weak demand from construction and automotive sectors. At the same time, 85% of companies reported aluminum scrap shortages, while 66% described order conditions as poor. Around 57% of companies do not expect business conditions to improve by the end of 2026. The industry also warned of risks linked to high energy costs, tight scrap supply and production relocation, with some companies already implementing layoffs, capacity cuts and overseas shifts.
May 29, 2026 11:12Sortera Technologies has brought its new recycling facility in Lebanon, Tennessee into full operation this month, doubling the company’s annual processing capacity to about 240 million lbs. The plant uses AI-driven sorting, data analytics and advanced sensor technology to convert mixed aluminum scrap into high-purity recycled materials for the automotive, construction and aerospace sectors. The company said the facility strengthens domestic recycled aluminum supply chains in the US “Battery Belt” and southern automotive corridor, helping reduce reliance on imported materials. Sortera added that its recycled aluminum production uses about 95% less energy than primary aluminum production.
May 26, 2026 09:24Norsk Hydro remains in focus after recent quarterly results highlighted its continued push into low-carbon and recycled aluminum. As one of the few fully integrated aluminum producers covering bauxite, alumina, primary aluminum, extrusion and recycling, Hydro is leveraging Norway’s hydropower resources to strengthen its low-carbon aluminum position. The company said recycled and low-emission aluminum products could become a major long-term earnings driver, while scrap collection and remelting operations continue expanding in Europe and the US. However, the aluminum industry still faces pressure from weak construction demand, oversupply concerns and volatile energy prices. Hydro believes renewable energy access, recycling and downstream processing will remain key competitive advantages.
May 26, 2026 09:23The EU-funded RecAL project aims to upgrade Europe’s aluminum recycling system by addressing alloy contamination and downcycling challenges. Led by the Austrian Institute of Technology, the initiative brings together 19 partners from nine countries to develop 14 recycling technologies and the “RecAL Hub” digital platform to improve scrap sorting, traceability and reuse efficiency, reducing the loss of high-value aluminum into lower-grade products. Aluminum beverage can recycling rates in Europe have reached 76.3%, while automotive aluminum recycling exceeds 90%. As demand for lightweight materials and circular economy solutions grows, the industry is accelerating efforts toward high-performance recycled aluminum and digitalized recycling management systems.
May 21, 2026 09:52A RUSAL official said low-carbon and recycled aluminum could help Azerbaijan’s construction sector reduce lifecycle costs and carbon emissions. The company noted that aluminum’s lightweight, durability and recyclability are driving wider use in buildings and municipal infrastructure. RUSAL’s ALLOW low-carbon aluminum brand produces more than 3 million tones annually using Siberian hydropower, with emissions of about 5.9 tCO2e per tone, well below the global industry average. The company added that aluminum can be infinitely recycled after building decommissioning, supporting circular economy and low-carbon urban development.
