They engaged in brainstorming sessions on hot topics such as changes in the global supply-demand pattern of the secondary metals industry, global secondary metals industry development trends and challenges from a Middle Eastern perspective, in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges in India, the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia, the battery resource market in Southeast Asia: supply chain dynamics, the current situation and future challenges of the secondary lead industry in Southeast Asia, the development of the global secondary metals supply-demand pattern from an Indian perspective, and secondary copper and aluminum scrap yards: innovative recycling and sorting technologies to support the industry's green and carbon-reduction journey. Cui Suoye, Director of SMM Nonferrous Consulting, shared insights on the topic of "changes in the global supply-demand pattern of the secondary metals industry." Regarding secondary aluminum, he stated that over the past decade, the proportion of secondary aluminum production in developed countries such as North America, South America, Europe, and Japan has been significantly higher than that in developing countries. As developing countries benchmark against developed countries, their future potential for aluminum scrap demand will be even more substantial. From 2022 to 2042, SMM expects the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of extruded aluminum scrap to reach approximately 5%. By 2042, extruded aluminum scrap is projected to account for about 33% of total aluminum scrap. Regarding secondary copper, he mentioned that SMM forecasts the global copper scrap market size to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% from 2024 to 2030. Wu Xiaoyun, Chairman of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Lead-Acid Battery Industry Alliance, shared his views on "the current situation and transformation path of the secondary lead industry in Southeast Asia." He emphasized that the construction of a recycling system is closely linked to the healthy development of the secondary lead industry. The healthy development of the secondary lead industry relies on mutual support across the industry chain, rational government planning and policy support, as well as industry self-discipline and self-regulation. Xie Xiaoying, Director of Sustainable Development Business at Shanghai Lvran Environmental Information Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the topic of "the development path of the global secondary metals industry driven by the ESG context." She pointed out that despite the numerous challenges faced by the secondary metals industry, investing in advanced technologies can effectively handle various complex materials while reducing processing costs. To ensure supply chain reliability, manufacturers may adopt vertical integration strategies in key markets, which, however, will increase operational costs. In addition, the price of scrap metal is usually referenced against the market price of the relevant primary metal. Carbon pricing and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) can help enhance the economic benefits of underutilized scrap metal resources. 》Click to view the live photo stream link 》Click to view the special coverage of this conference Opening Remarks Speakers: Fan Xin, Chairman of SMM Li Shilong, President of China Renewable Resources Industry Technology Innovation Alliance Award Ceremony Main Forum Guest Speeches Speech Topic: Green Transformation and Sustainable Development Prospects of Thailand's Recycled Metal Industry Guest Speaker: Secretary General of ASEAN Institution of Recycling (AIR) Dr. Somthai Wongcharoen The Thailand Recyclers Trade Association is composed of major recycling enterprises in Thailand, including smelting companies, wholesale collection enterprises, and import-export companies. Jun 11, 2025 14:396 Days to the Conference Conference Name: 2025 SMM 2nd Global Secondary Metals Industry Summit Date: 2025.06.12-13 Venue: Hyatt Regency Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Thailand Industry leaders including Japan Kosei Industries, SVOLT Energy Technology, Thailand Ministry of Industry, MNMA, Material Recycling Association of India, JCC International, Ruiyi Resources & Environment, and Yixin International will gather to explore new trends, technologies, and policies in the secondary metals industry! Against the backdrop of global cooperation to address climate change, green and low-carbon collaboration has become an inevitable choice for the international community. In recent years, China has introduced policies encouraging secondary metals enterprises to "go global," with an increasingly improved market environment accelerating domestic companies' global expansion and active exploration of overseas markets. The "go global era" has become an indispensable force in promoting the green, low-carbon, and international development of China's nonferrous metals industry. With the introduction of favorable policies such as the Carbon Peaking Implementation Plan for the Nonferrous Metals Industry, the 14th Five-Year Plan for the Raw Materials Industry, the Carbon Peaking Implementation Plan for the Industrial Sector, and the Measures to Promote Stable Growth of Foreign Trade, secondary metals enterprises have emerged under a model involving overseas resource recycling, processing into standardized secondary metal raw materials for import to China, and direct service to local downstream users, achieving continuous breakthroughs. Chinese secondary metals enterprises, riding the policy momentum, are accelerating overseas expansion, bringing new capacity, employment, and tax revenue to host countries. Hundreds of companies have acquired scrap yards or established sorting bases in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Japan and South Korea. Due to their wide application in automotive, home appliance, telecommunications, construction, and aerospace sectors, these enterprises are becoming practitioners of the dual-circulation development path integrating domestic and overseas markets. Industry sources revealed that China's secondary nonferrous metals production reached 19.15 million mt in 2024, ranking first globally for 15 consecutive years. The physical content of imported secondary copper and aluminum raw materials exceeded 4 million mt, accounting for 23% of total raw material supply, down 1.7 percentage points from 2023. A supply structure has largely formed, dominated by domestic recycling with imports as a key supplement. For instance, the number of countries and regions exporting secondary aluminum raw materials to China increased to 95 (up by 6 from 2023), with 22 (up by 4) exceeding 10,000 mt. According to industry forecasts, China's recycled metal industry is expected to exceed 500 billion yuan by 2025 and reach a trillion-yuan market by 2030, with an annual compound growth rate exceeding 15%. Meanwhile, with the recovery of the global economy and the rise of emerging markets, regional recycled metal markets exhibit unique development trends. India , leveraging its vast population and rapid industrialization, demonstrates strong market demand, yet faces constraints in sustainable development due to an incomplete recycling system, lack of quality control, and high energy costs. The Middle East , benefiting from its strategic location and abundant resources, has become a key hub for global recycled metal trade. However, challenges such as heavy reliance on external demand, geopolitical tensions, and lagging local recycling technologies significantly hinder innovation and competitiveness. Europe , with its robust environmental regulations and advanced technology, leads in high-quality recycled metal development. Nevertheless, it struggles with high recycling costs, raw material shortages, import dependence, and inconsistent recycling standards among member states. Southeast Asia , driven by manufacturing growth and favorable policies, continues to unlock market potential but faces obstacles like insufficient capacity, compliance risks, and regional trade barriers. Thus, a thorough analysis of these regional markets' strengths and challenges not only helps industry players grasp global dynamics but also provides strategic insights for business planning. In this context, SMM will host the 2025 SMM 2nd Global Recycled Metal Industry Chain Summit in Thailand on June 12-13, 2025. The summit will convene associations, top-tier enterprises, research institutions, experts, and policymakers through three forums , focusing on key topics such as global recycled metal industry trends and challenges, interviews with top-tier recycled metal entrepreneurs, and changes in the global recycled metal supply-demand pattern . May 30, 2025 15:52Recently, Lenovo and Huawei have successively launched new AI terminal products, further integrating intelligent agents with PCs. Among them, Lenovo unveiled its Tianxi Personal Super Intelligent Agent, along with AI PCs, AI smartphones, and AI tablets equipped with the Tianxi Personal Super Intelligent Agent. Huawei's first HarmonyOS-powered computer also integrated the Xiao Yi Intelligent Agent, marking the first time Huawei's AI assistant, Xiao Yi Intelligent Agent, has been available on a computer. Since 2023, chip producers and terminal brands have been actively positioning themselves in the AI PC market. With frequent moves in the industry, AI PCs are entering their "iPhone" moment. However, consumer acceptance of existing products remains mediocre. Several industry insiders told the China Securities Journal that the main challenges for AI PCs lie in the upstream supply chain, including memory and chips, with optimization still needed in cost control and scalability. It is estimated that the industry chain will take two to three years to gradually mature. ▍Real Challenges in the Supply Chain Li Weichang, General Manager of Lenovo China's Consumer PC and Tablet Business Unit, said in an interview with the China Securities Journal that, unlike the overseas standardized path led by Microsoft, the domestic AI PC ecosystem is fragmented, resulting in a diluted concept of AI PC. Li believes there is significant confusion in the market regarding the concept. "Some producers market NPU chips as a selling point, but many consumers who buy these so-called AI PCs find they lack AI functionality and do not improve efficiency," he said. There are also many practical bottlenecks in the industry chain, preventing AI PCs from truly reaching a stage of "natural progression." "For example, the upstream supply chain has not yet achieved cost control and scalability optimization, making it impossible to ensure a good user experience with smaller memory. In addition, the chips currently used by all producers are basically high-end chips, which are expensive and equipped with NPU modules capable of AI acceleration," Li said. Li used memory as an example, saying, "Large models like 7B require high memory, while the current mainstream is 16GB memory machines. The needs of general users are mainly for simple AI Q&A functions. Installing a 7B model on a device may affect its speed." However, Li is optimistic about the industry's development. With the scalability of the industry and technological upgrades, such as 32GB memory gradually becoming the market mainstream, the issues will be alleviated. At the same time, model distillation technology is also advancing, aiming to make models smaller and more capable. ▍Low Market Penetration but Rapid Growth Commenting on the current state of AI PCs, Xu Yue, an analyst at IDC China, believes that AI PCs are in the early stages of development, with low market penetration but rapid growth. Xu Yue stated that early AI PCs were mainly optimized based on traditional CPUs and GPUs to support some basic AI tasks. Nowadays, PC suppliers have introduced neural processing units (NPUs) specifically designed for AI, and their computing power has begun to rapidly upgrade to over 40 TOPS. These NPUs can run AI tasks more efficiently. According to Lenovo's internal data, the current activation rate of AI features in high-end models is 20-30%, with some models exceeding 30% and still rising. This indicates that the acceptance among mid-to-high-end users is increasing. In addition, Lenovo is also organizing AIGC campus creation competitions for college students and offering preferential policies to encourage more young people to embrace the AI era. Li Weichang revealed to a reporter from the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily that Yang Yuanqing, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group, attaches great importance to the AI business. "He personally reviews the overall activity of AI PCs in the China region every week and monitors the trend of weekly active rates. Once a decline in activity is detected, such as a decrease instead of an increase, he will ask us to analyze the specific reasons." ▍When will native AI agent devices emerge? The integration of AI agents with PCs is becoming a key exploration direction for technology producers. Recently, Lenovo released multiple super AI agents, including the Tianxi Super Personal AI Agent and the Lexiang Enterprise Super AI Agent. IBM also launched a tool platform on the same day that can build AI agents within five minutes. Subsequently, Huawei announced that the Xiaoyi AI agent would make its debut on HarmonyOS PCs, integrating the Pangu large model and DeepSeek capabilities. Li Weichang judged that the value of AI agents as an entry point for human-computer interaction is becoming increasingly prominent. "In the future, we may have multiple AI agents with different functions on a single device, each responsible for different tasks, just like how OpenAI encourages developers to build various 'small robots' or 'small agents' that can freely combine and collaborate on the platform." This transformation may reshape the business models of the traditional internet era— shifting from an application-centric approach to an agent-centric one. Li Weichang stated that users may no longer need to download a large number of apps but can complete tasks by invoking different functional agents. Hardware producers will no longer be mere device providers but will become the optimal carriers for these agents to run on. Currently, the exploration of AI implementation has extended from PCs and mobile phones to lightweight devices such as smartwatches and glasses. However, Li Weichang admitted, "These devices still have inherent limitations, such as communication distance, computing power bottlenecks, weight, and size issues. Therefore, a true "native AI device" is still in the exploratory phase, and a clear product form has yet to emerge . This resembles the evolutionary process of a new species, requiring joint exploration by the industry." ▍AI PC Industry Chain Expected to Mature in 2-3 Years According to Canalys data, AI PC shipments in mainland China reached 5.8 million units in 2024, accounting for 15% of the overall PC market. Canalys believes this trend is expected to accelerate, with AI PCs projected to account for 34% of PC shipments in the Greater China region by 2025. " Drawing on the patterns of previous product upgrade cycles, the entire industry chain is expected to mature in approximately 2-3 years ," he further explained. "As upstream costs are optimized, particularly with the decline in chip prices, MP-level chips will demonstrate better cost-effectiveness, creating favorable conditions for the widespread adoption of AI PCs." Xu Yue also believes that with the continuous maturation of technology and reduction in costs, the market penetration rate of AI PCs is expected to continue to rise rapidly. "Chip technology will continue to make breakthroughs, with the performance of NPUs continuously improving. As more AI PCs with computing power exceeding 40 TOPS become available, they will further meet the demands for local large model deployment and more complex AI applications. At this stage, the application scenarios of AI PCs are mainly concentrated in content creation, smart office, etc., with the potential to expand into diversified scenarios such as education, travel, entertainment, and health in the future. In addition, localized deployment is the future direction. " "Due to the high operational costs, data privacy, and security risks associated with cloud-based AI deployment, deploying AI technology from the cloud to localized PCs has become an important trend. " Xu Yue said.

Apr 24, 2025 18:43The US Exempts Certain Goods from "Reciprocal Tariffs" According to Xinhua News Agency, the US Customs and Border Protection announced on the evening of April 11 that the federal government has agreed to exempt electronic products such as smartphones, computers, and chips from so-called "reciprocal tariffs." Documents released by the Customs and Border Protection show that these products are excluded from the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" imposed by the government on trading partners. The documents indicate that the exemptions apply to electronic products entering the US after April 5, and "reciprocal tariffs" already paid can be refunded. Bloomberg reported that the measure may alleviate the price pressure faced by US consumers to some extent, while benefiting electronics giants including Apple and Samsung Electronics. Financial analyst Hussein Kubesi pointed out that this marks a "180-degree turn" in the US government's tariff policy. Recently, the US government has implemented extensive and erratic tariff policies, causing turmoil in financial markets and drawing criticism from Republican heavyweights, including former Vice President Mike Pence. The First Round of Indirect Negotiations Between the US and Iran Concludes, Both Sides Agree to Continue Talks Next Week According to CCTV News, the first round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the US on lifting sanctions and nuclear issues concluded in Oman on the afternoon of April 12. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the talks were conducted in a constructive atmosphere of mutual respect, and both sides conveyed their respective government positions on lifting illegal sanctions against Iran and Iran's peaceful nuclear program through the Omani Foreign Minister. Both sides agreed to continue the talks next week. Additionally, after the indirect negotiations, the heads of the Iranian and US delegations had a brief face-to-face exchange witnessed by the Omani Foreign Minister as they left the meeting venue. According to Global Times citing AFP and other media reports, before the US and Iran held talks in Oman on April 12 on issues including Iran's nuclear program, US President Trump stated on April 11 that he "hopes Iran becomes a great country, but without nuclear weapons." What Lies Ahead for Crude Oil Prices? This week, Trump announced comprehensive tariff measures, intensifying expectations of a global economic recession and dampening crude oil consumption expectations. WTI crude oil fell to a four-year low of $55.12 per barrel. Regarding this week's performance of crude oil futures, Chen Dong, a senior energy and chemical researcher at Baocheng Futures, explained that while the US "reciprocal tariff" policy suppressed global economic growth expectations, OPEC+'s accelerated production increase decision significantly exceeded market expectations. Against the backdrop of weakening macro and industry factors, both domestic and overseas crude oil futures prices plummeted. Chen Dong believes that the recent sharp decline in crude oil futures prices is due to two factors: first, the US "reciprocal tariff" policy has sparked concerns of a global economic recession, turning macro sentiment pessimistic and causing a sharp decline in risk asset prices; second, eight OPEC+ oil-producing countries recently decided to increase production by 411,000 barrels per day starting in May, significantly exceeding market expectations and further weakening already fragile oil prices. He noted that OPEC+'s unexpected production increase is a response to long-term overproduction by Kazakhstan and Iraq. Meanwhile, OPEC+ faces the dilemma of choosing between market share and price stability. Non-OPEC+ supply led by the US is eroding OPEC+'s market share. The EIA expects non-OPEC crude oil supply to increase by 1.44 million barrels per day YoY in 2025. The IEA believes non-OPEC crude oil supply will grow by 1.5 million barrels per day YoY in 2025. Additionally, OPEC expects non-OPEC crude oil supply to increase by 1.01 million barrels per day YoY in 2025. With supply expectations continuing to rebound, the price center of both domestic and overseas crude oil futures is steadily declining. Sui Xiaoying, chief petrochemical researcher at the trading consulting department of Founder Midterm Futures, stated that US tariff measures have escalated global trade friction, increased the risk of a global economic recession, exacerbated financial market turmoil, and caused a sharp decline in international oil prices. "Affected by US tariff policies, crude oil consumption faces a blow," Sui Xiaoying said. Against the backdrop of OPEC+'s further production increases, global crude oil supply will rebound in 2025. Meanwhile, under the expectation of a global economic recession, crude oil consumption growth will decline. With increased US sanctions, there is a risk of reduced crude oil supply from Iran and Venezuela, potentially alleviating expectations of a crude oil market surplus. The EIA expects the crude oil market to face a supply surplus in H2 2025, with the surplus reaching 640,000 barrels per day in Q4. The IEA expects the surplus to reach 1.1 million barrels per day in Q4 this year, with an annual surplus of 600,000 barrels per day. Additionally, Sui Xiaoying noted that future escalation of the trade war will negatively impact the global economy, further dampening crude oil consumption. After the US announced the "reciprocal tariff" policy, Goldman Sachs lowered its 2025 and 2026 crude oil demand growth forecasts to 300,000 and 400,000 barrels per day, respectively, while Morgan Stanley reduced its H2 2025 crude oil demand growth forecast to 500,000 barrels per day. Yan Lili, a crude oil and asphalt analyst at the New Era Futures Research Institute, stated that this week's EIA monthly report significantly lowered crude oil demand and price forecasts. The EIA expects global crude oil consumption to increase by 900,000 barrels per day in 2025 and 1 million barrels per day in 2026, down by 400,000 and 100,000 barrels per day, respectively, from last month. Overall, affected by tariff policies, short-term oil price trends are weak but may experience significant fluctuations. US-Iran negotiations are crucial, with the US Treasury pressuring Iran again, and Iran considering a temporary nuclear agreement with the US to buy more negotiation time. If negotiations break down, geopolitical risks may escalate. Chen Dong believes that short-term crude oil futures may continue to decline. Although US President Trump announced a 90-day suspension of "reciprocal tariffs" on some countries, this 90-day period is a negotiation phase, and high tariffs may still be implemented after the period ends. Additionally, OPEC+ is entering a production increase cycle. As the summer oil consumption season in the Northern Hemisphere approaches, it may bring phased support to crude oil futures prices. Looking ahead, Sui Xiaoying stated that US tariff policies will further depress oil prices in the long term. Recent consecutive sharp declines in crude oil have released negative sentiment, and short-term tariff policy trends will continue to dominate market sentiment and oil prices. In the absence of further negative news, oil prices may experience an oversold rebound, but overall upward momentum is limited. In the long term, as Trump's tariff policies and various countries' countermeasures gradually take effect, deteriorating trade conditions will increase the risk of a global economic downturn, potentially leading to a global economic recession, negatively impacting crude oil consumption and further depressing oil prices. Therefore, the overall trend for crude oil remains bearish.
