According to foreign media reports, Novelis restarted its hot-rolling operations at its Oswego aluminum plant in New York State on Wednesday. Fires broke out at the factory in September and November 2025, and production has been suspended for nine months, triggering a supply crisis for U.S. automakers. Novelis has about a dozen automaker customers - Ford, General Motors, Strantis and others. Novelis said it is accelerating the rollout of standardized operating systems at the plant. The company's new rolling mill in Alabama is expected to be operational by the end of the year, which will further expand Novelis' production scale.

Novelis has published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for selected aluminium products in its European architecture and construction portfolio, providing transparent and independently verified environmental data for customers. The EPDs cover primary aluminium, high-recycled-content alloys and anodized products containing more than 90% recycled aluminium. The company said demand for low-carbon and high-recycled-content aluminium continues to rise as environmental regulations and sustainability certification requirements tighten across the European construction sector. Markets believe the new EPDs will further support the adoption of circular and low-carbon aluminium materials in building applications.

The executive also stated that 2027 will be a “turning point” for its subsidiary Novelis, which is ramping up production of aluminum can sheets. In the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, Hindalco Industries reported revenue of 781.33 billion rupees, a 20% year-on-year increase from 648.9 billion rupees in the same period of the previous fiscal year; consolidated net profit was 25.97 billion rupees, a 51% year-on-year decrease from 52.83 billion rupees in the same period last year.

Novelis released its Q4 and full-year fiscal 2026 results, showing that net sales increased by 4% year-over-year to $4.8 billion in Q4, primarily driven by higher average aluminum prices, but partially offset by a 12% decrease in total rolled product shipments to 844,000 tonnes. The decline in shipments was attributed to production disruptions at the Oswego plant and geopolitical tensions leading to weakness in certain specialty aluminum markets. The company reported a net loss attributable to common shareholders of $84 million in Q4, compared to a net profit attributable to common shareholders of $294 million in the same period last year.

Novelis said the hot mill at its Oswego plant in New York is expected to resume production within the next few weeks, earlier than the previously expected end-June restart timeline. The facility experienced two fires in September and November 2025, both limited to the hot mill area with no injuries reported. The company said other key assets were unaffected. Recovery and commissioning activities are progressing faster than expected, and the restart is expected to help address pent-up demand and normalize shipments. The two fires caused an estimated USD 1.7 billion financial impact and reduced rolled product shipments by about 73 kilotons, negatively affecting adjusted EBITDA by around USD 53 million.

According to foreign media reports, Novelis has renewed its cooperation agreement with Infinitum, Norway's beverage container deposit refund system. This agreement aims to ensure that all aluminum beverage cans used in Norway are efficiently collected, recycled, and reintegrated into the production cycle. Through this cooperation, aluminum collected by Infinitum's recycling facilities in Norway is transported to Novelis' recycling plant in Latchford, UK, where it will be processed into new aluminum can sheets.
