Overview:In mid-October, Guinea-China prices followed the decline as C3 shipping route rates continued to fall, but with Q4 shipping capacity relatively constrained, bulk carriers remained difficult to secure, and more mines and traders took the opportunity to lock in November-December shipment schedules. As the largest cost component of bauxite declined, alumina refineries seized the moment to push down imported bauxite prices in order to procure bauxite at lower costs; conversely, although ocean freight rates dropped significantly, other mining costs for bauxite remained relatively high, and upstream expectations for ore prices continued to stay high overall. On the whole, the imported bauxite market extended its price standoff. Today, the SMM imported bauxite CIF index price held steady at $72.23/mt, Guinea bauxite CIF prices remained in the $70-72.5/mt range, and Guinea bauxite FOB prices stayed in the $35-40/mt range. Prices for other non-standard low-temperature bauxite showed no changes and no market transactions.
Downstream: Overall, domestic alumina refinery bauxite inventories remain healthy. With ocean freight rates currently low, downstream buyers are likely to continue pushing for lower prices. Prices downstream have already been pushed down to between $71 and $72 or lower. Upstream transmission has been slow, and it is expected that some time of negotiation will be needed before spot bauxite cargo transactions are seen.
Trader: Since returning from the holiday, there has been almost no spot trading activity reported for bauxite. Traders are currently taking advantage of lower freight rates to lock in shipping, but mine shipments are expected to remain at low production and dispatch levels due to persistently high costs.
Upstream: Currently, mine costs remain high. Although ocean freight rates are trending downward, shipments are still not feasible. It was originally expected that bauxite long-term contract pricing could proceed in October based on the 2027 alumina long-term agreements, but as of now, there is no news on long-term agreements from either side, making it impossible to provide corresponding quotations.
Trader: In October, mines are expected to continue shipping under long-term association contracts, but prices are still under discussion as of now, with no clear market quotations emerging yet. Market prices should remain around $72, but no spot transactions have been heard of so far.
Upstream: October term prices have not been released yet. The overall market is currently in a continuous standoff. Some traders and mines have locked in vessels for November-December, taking advantage of lower freight rates in October, but October shipments are expected to remain relatively low overall.
Upstream: Although ocean freight rates showed a decline, overall market activity remained weak, with prices continuing to be in a state of negotiation. Currently, imported bauxite prices are holding at around $72, but there are no October long-term contract or spot cargo prices yet.
