The board of Tata Steel has formally approved the commencement of the engineering and regulatory process for a 1 million tonne per annum (mtpa) HIsarna plant in Jamshedpur, India. The HIsarna technology allows for the production of liquid iron directly from iron ore and coal powder, bypassing the traditional sintering and coking stages, which is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20%.
