This week, against the backdrop of fluctuating upward copper prices, the secondary copper industry chain showed a complex situation in which extremely tight upstream raw material supply coexisted with persistent negative margins for downstream finished products. In the secondary copper rod market, SMM data showed that the operating rate fell further to 5.45% this week, down 0.38 percentage points MoM and 25.43 percentage points YoY
Apr 5, 2026 02:04US President Trump declared that, before long, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened “with ease,” at which point the US would “take the oil.” He also claimed that the US military “has not yet begun destroying Iran’s remaining facilities” and plans to launch follow-up strikes on Iran’s bridges and power plants. In response, the Iranian military issued a statement saying that if the US dares to take action against Iran’s infrastructure, Iran will destroy “all assets and infrastructure” of the US and Israel in the Middle East.

[SMM Analysis]Weak Supply-Demand Pattern; Secondary Aluminum Prices Were Expected to Come Under Pressure and Pull Back in April
Apr 3, 2026 21:37Overall, cost support remained strong, supply tightened while demand stayed stable. As tender prices became clear, aluminum fluoride prices were generally raised by around 800 yuan/mt in line with the guidance. Going forward, close attention should be paid to dynamic changes in raw material costs and adjustments in downstream procurement pace.
Apr 3, 2026 21:03[SMM Nickel Flash] The average SMM price of 10-12% high-grade NPI fell WoW by 1 yuan/nickel unit to 1,082.5 yuan/nickel unit (ex-factory, tax included), while the average price of Indonesia's NPI FOB index fell WoW by $0.02/nickel unit to $136.58/nickel unit. The high-grade NPI market generally remained stable, and after the transaction center stabilized, the market entered a state of back-and-forth negotiations between upstream and downstream, with prices under pressure in the short term.

The proposed open-pit mine is expected to take three years to build and operate for 28 years, with processing capacity increasing from 108,000 tonnes per day in the first five years to 162,000 tonnes per day from year six onward.
Apr 3, 2026 19:10Chile’s most pressing crisis at present is the issue of water resources. The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world and also the core area for copper and lithium ore extraction. The local area has experienced a drought for as long as 14 years, and reservoir storage has fallen to only about 30%. For miners, water resources are not a secondary issue, but an indispensable key production factor in such processes as ore processing, dust suppression, and equipment cooling. The decline in ore grade has further exacerbated the predicament
Apr 3, 2026 19:10SMM News, April 3: LME lead opened at $1,904.5/mt this week. At the beginning of the week, amid disruptions from geopolitical tensions and a stronger US dollar, LME lead swung wildly within the range of $1,892.5-1,917/mt, hitting a low of $1,892.5/mt during the period. Mid-week, the market expected geopolitical tensions to ease, and coupled with support from the non-ferrous metals sector, lead prices fluctuated upward and climbed to a high of $1,944/mt. Toward the end of the week, geopolitical tensions flared up again, and together with profit-taking by bulls, LME lead retreated from highs and consolidated. Supported by the strength of SHFE lead, its losses narrowed, and it finally closed at $1,934.5/mt, up $31.5 from the beginning of the week, or 1.66%. The market was closed on Friday for Good Friday. The most-traded SHFE lead 2605 contract opened at 16,535 yuan/mt this week. In early trading, lead prices edged down and fell to a low of 16,415 yuan/mt, then moved sideways within the range of 16,430-16,530 yuan/mt. Mid-week, bullish funds pushed lead prices higher and kept them hovering at highs, with prices touching a high of 16,810 yuan/mt by the close. It finally closed at 16,785 yuan/mt, up 230 yuan WoW, or 1.39%. > Subscribe to View Historical SMM Metal Spot Prices
Apr 3, 2026 17:21Due to declining operating enthusiasm among lead smelters and the recovery of supply from lead-zinc mines in China, lead concentrates in the Chinese market were slightly more abundant in April. In addition, affected by weak silver prices and unclear expectations, smelters actively negotiated prices as by-product revenue declined. It is understood that the tender and bid prices for lead concentrates at some lead-zinc mines have already risen slightly by varying amounts of 30-50 yuan/mt Pb, while smelters maintained strong wait-and-see sentiment. In regions such as Hunan and Yunnan, some small-scale smelters still extended their maintenance-related shutdown cycles. Although sentiment in the precious metals market was pessimistic in the short term, the payable indicator for silver content in lead concentrates with various silver grades in the market has not yet been adjusted. Negotiations between mines and smelters mainly focused on increasing TCs. Except that some silver concentrates whose coefficient was raised in Q1 (with silver content above 3,000 g/t) no longer quoted high prices above 0.97, the silver payable indicators of other types of silver-bearing lead concentrates remained stable.
