[SMM Stainless Steel Scrap Market Weekly Review] Cost Advantages Underpin Stainless Steel Scrap Market, End-Use Demand Weakness Restrains Short-Term Upside Room This week, 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts prices in east China were flat, with a quotation range of 10,400-10,500 yuan/mt; in the Foshan area, 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts prices remained stable in tandem, within a price range of 10,300-10,600 yuan/mt. From a raw material cost analysis perspective, the current cost of producing stainless steel entirely with stainless steel scrap is about 14,607.48 yuan/mt, while that with high-grade NPI is as high as 14,995.22 yuan/mt, with the two maintaining a stable cost price spread. This week, stainless steel scrap prices remained generally stable. During the week, SS futures showed a consolidation pattern of first declining and then rising, and the fluctuations in futures did not provide clear guidance for the spot market. Stainless steel product spot prices consolidated in tandem, with overall prices basically flat compared to last week. At month-end, stainless steel mills initiated a tender for high-grade NPI procurement, driving NPI prices to rebound slightly, but the extent of the increase was relatively limited, and the upward support from the raw material side was weak, keeping the overall stainless steel scrap market stable. Along with the slight recovery in high-grade NPI prices, the cost advantage of stainless steel scrap relative to it has increased, further highlighting its cost substitution competitiveness and forming solid bottom support for scrap prices. Overall, costs and expectations provided support, but end-use fundamentals continued to suppress the market's upward trend. As some stainless steel mills gradually wrap up previous production cuts and maintenance, the market expects stainless steel production to rebound in August, corresponding rigid demand for stainless steel scrap is expected to increase, combined with the current scrap...

Jul 10, 2026 23:11[SMM Stainless Steel Scrap Market Weekly Review] SS Weakness and Sluggish Demand: Stainless Steel Scrap’s Cost Advantage Struggles Against Bearish Expectations This week, prices of 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts in east China pulled back, with a quotation range of 10,100-10,200 yuan/mt; prices for the same grade of stainless steel scrap in the Foshan area also fell back, ranging from 10,000-10,300 yuan/mt. From the raw material cost side analysis, the cost of producing stainless steel entirely from stainless steel scrap is currently about 14,218.64 yuan/mt, while the cost of using high-grade NPI reaches 14,972.65 yuan/mt, still maintaining a large cost spread. This week, stainless steel scrap prices drifted lower. SS futures pulled back throughout the week, with bearish sentiment spreading on the futures side, directly dragging down spot prices of stainless steel products slightly. The weak futures set the overall market tone. On the spot side, mainstream stainless steel mills adopted a cautious approach due to higher production costs and uncertain market outlook, as their published high-grade NPI tender prices were low, further weighing on sentiment in the nickel-based raw material and scrap markets. As a result, some stainless steel mills suspended purchases of stainless steel scrap during the week, market buying interest weakened noticeably, overall trading was subdued, and the price center of stainless steel scrap continued to shift lower. Overall, the cost advantage struggled to offset the suppression from bearish market expectations. This week, stainless steel scrap still held a significant economic advantage over high-grade NPI, and the cost substitution logic has not reversed, providing some bottom support for scrap prices. However, overall market sentiment remains weak, steel mill cost pressure…
Jul 10, 2026 15:04[SMM Stainless Steel Scrap Market Weekly Review] Futures Weakness Dragged Down Stainless Steel Scrap Prices; Off-Season Demand Slump Pressured Market This week, prices of 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts in east China pulled back, with a quotation range of 10,350-10,450 yuan/mt; prices of the same specification stainless steel scrap in the Foshan area fell in tandem, with a price range of 10,200-10,500 yuan/mt. From the perspective of raw material production cost analysis, the current cost to produce stainless steel entirely using stainless steel scrap is about 14,520.18 yuan/mt, while the cost using high-grade NPI reaches 14,988.98 yuan/mt, with the two maintaining a favorable cost spread. Stainless steel scrap prices pulled back slightly this week. During the week, SS futures consolidated weakly, and the weak sentiment in the futures market transmitted to the spot market, driving stainless steel finished product spot prices to also pull back slightly; the decline in the substitute raw material high-grade NPI slowed down, reducing its drag on the market, but the overall atmosphere in the raw material market remained mediocre. Under the influence of the futures-spot linkage, stainless steel scrap prices edged down slightly in tandem. Overall, cost support is difficult to offset the bearish pressure from fundamentals. The market has now entered the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, with end-use demand lacking internal momentum, and the expected production schedules of stainless steel mills pulling back, directly leading to a simultaneous weakening of rigid demand for stainless steel scrap. Meanwhile, news about the supplementary quota for Indonesian nickel ore remains unresolved, and policy uncertainty in the industry chain has been rising, leaving the overall market sentiment cautious and wait-and-see. Although stainless steel scrap still maintains a decent economic advantage over high-grade NPI, providing bottom support for prices, under the dual pressures of weak futures and the off-season…
Jul 3, 2026 15:51[SMM Aluminum Flash] China's inventory of secondary aluminum ingot in major consumption regions was 28,100 mt today, down by 640 mt from the previous day, still mainly driven by destocking in the Foshan area.
Jun 9, 2026 09:24[SMM Stainless Steel Scrap Weekly Review] Scrap Edges Up on Raw Material Linkage, Off-Season Constraints Cap Gains This week, the price of 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts in east China edged up, with a quotation range of 10,400-10,500 yuan/mt. In the Foshan area, off-cuts of the same specification moved higher in tandem, trading in a range of 10,300-10,600 yuan/mt. From a raw material cost analysis perspective, the current production cost of stainless steel using 100% stainless steel scrap is approximately 14,580.48 yuan/mt, while the cost using only high-grade NPI stands at 15,153.78 yuan/mt, maintaining a significant cost spread between the two. Stainless steel scrap prices edged up this week. During the week, SS futures retreated after a rapid rise overall, while spot stainless steel prices fluctuated narrowly and held firm overall, providing a stable foundation for the stainless steel scrap market. Meanwhile, the alternative raw material high-grade NPI market continued to hold up well, with prices edging higher. The positive overall sentiment in the raw material segment spurred stainless steel scrap prices to rise in tandem. However, the market has now entered the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, with weak downstream end-use demand. Coupled with production cuts and maintenance at domestic steel mills, raw material demand expectations have weakened somewhat. The industry-wide issue of tight tax invoices has yet to be effectively resolved, continuing to constrain market trading activity. At the same time, recent grade degradation issues in high-grade NPI require steel mills to supplement nickel content with high grade nickel products, and combined with limitations in their production processes, it remains difficult for steel mills to significantly increase their use of stainless steel scrap. Although stainless steel scrap retains a favorable cost advantage over high-grade NPI, multiple bearish off-season factors on...
