【SMM News】 Data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on the 10th shows that in May 2026, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) market stabilized and recovered. Production and sales reached 1.554 million and 1.496 million units respectively, marking year-on-year growth of 22.4% and 14.4%. The proportion of NEV sales in total new car sales further increased, reaching 56.9%.

[Japan's May New Car Sales Edge Up Nearly 3% YoY] Data on vehicle registrations recently released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association showed that in May this year, domestic new car sales in Japan reached 332,997 units, edging up 2.75% YoY. Sales in the same period last year were 324,069 units, up 10% YoY. By category, passenger car sales were 276,910 units, up 2.75% YoY, and truck sales reached 55,168 units, up 2.2% YoY.

According to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the overall passenger car market in May showed a certain sales trend: total retail sales reached 1.545 million units, down 20% YoY but up 12% MoM. Breaking it down, the new energy segment also performed notably, with retail sales reaching 974,000 units, down 5% YoY but up 15% MoM.

The China Society of Automotive Engineers predicts that by 2030, NEVs will account for over 70% of new passenger car sales in China. Meanwhile, China's overseas vehicle sales will approach 10 million units, with about 40% of these sales coming from localized production and sales outside China.

Japan's four major car makers recently released data showing that total US new car sales in May reached 484,517 units, a 6.1% increase year over year. Although Toyota saw a slight year-over-year decline, all producers reported strong sales momentum, driven by robust new car demand. Against the backdrop of rising gasoline prices caused by the Middle East situation, hybrid vehicles (HVs) showed notable growth.

According to the Turkish Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), Turkey’s cumulative automotive sales fell by 7.4% year-on-year in the first five months of 2026, dropping to 433,005 units. During the January-May 2026 period, passenger car sales contracted by 7.0% year-on-year to 341,885 units, while light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales experienced a steeper decline of 9.2% to 91,120 units. In May 2026 alone, the total vehicle market shrank by 10.1% year-on-year to 100,305 units, with car sales dipping 8.3% to 80,260 units and LCV sales sliding 16.8% to 20,045 units.
