The furnace has been idle since September 2025 due to weak demand, and the current refurbishment focuses on rebuilding the hearth with new ceramic materials to extend its operational life by four years. This move signals the company's readiness to react to potential recovery in European steel demand despite ongoing regional economic headwinds.

[SMM Steel] During the Progressive Punjab Investors’ Summit, major steel players announced massive CAPEX plans fueled by new ease-of-business policies. The company’s mining department is currently operating at 75% of its full capacity, producing approximately 7.5 million tonnes of concentrate per year. CEO Mauro Longobardo noted that while port attacks have delayed some coking coal deliveries from Australia and the USA, the current production volume is sufficient for both internal needs and exports to European subsidiaries.

[SMM Steel] Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced that construction of the ArcelorMittal/Nippon Steel (AM/NS) integrated steel plant in Anakapalli district will officially begin with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 23, 2026. The state government aims to complete the project by March 2028, alongside plans to accelerate industrial development and establish new industrial clusters in the region.
