Dear SMM users:
Thank you for your long-standing support and trust in the SMM Steel Research Team. To expand our coverage of India's steel market and improve the rigor and market representativeness of our data points, SMM is adding monthly India steel data published by the Ministry of Steel (MOS) to the SMM database. This update includes five new indicators.
New indicators and where they will appear
-
MOS India: Commercial Pig Iron Production: Monthly
Ferrous Metals > Pig Iron > Production > India
-
MOS India: Finished Steel Production: Monthly
Ferrous Metals > Steel > Production > India
-
MOS India: Apparent Steel Consumption: Monthly
Ferrous Metals > Steel > Demand > India
-
MOS India: Crude Steel Production: Monthly
Ferrous Metals > Crude Steel > Production > India
-
MOS India: Crude Steel Capacity Utilisation: Monthly
Ferrous Metals > Crude Steel > Capacity > India
Data specifications
Data source: Ministry of Steel, India (MOS)
Update frequency: Monthly
Update rules: Data for each month are published by the 30th of the following month.
Unit: 10kt for production and consumption; % for capacity utilisation
Decimal places: 2 dp for volumes (10kt); 1 dp for percentages
Attribute tags: Production, Demand, Capacity
Definitions
- Commercial pig iron production: Monthly production of pig iron on the JPC "for sale" (commercial pig iron) basis for India, excluding hot metal consumed in-house by integrated mills, as published by the Ministry of Steel/JPC provisional figures are revised in subsequent release
- Finished steel production: India finished steel production (non-alloy + alloy/stainless), as published by the Ministry of Steel / JPC; provisional figures are revised in subsequent releases.
- Apparent steel consumption: India apparent steel consumption (non-alloy + alloy/stainless) = output + imports - exports, with JPC's stock / double-counting adjustment, as published by the Ministry of Steel / JPC. Not directly comparable with the WSA series.
- Crude steel production: India crude steel production, as published by the Ministry of Steel / JPC; provisional figures are revised in subsequent releases.
- Crude steel capacity utilisation: India crude steel capacity utilisation rate = monthly crude steel output ÷ (fiscal-year installed capacity ÷ 12), 1 dp.
The 5 indicators will take effect on October 22, 2026. After they take effect, you can view the latest data at data-pro.smm.cn or in the SMM database terminal.
